How is this even supposed to work? Prospective buyer shows up and goes “oh, I was hoping for fender skirts, and it’s also really rusty, but I did drive all the way here, guess I’ll buy it anyway?” Do people do that? I once drove 4 hours to check out a car and went home empty handed because it had a paint blister on the leading edge of the hood.

I almost got an Au di Coupe GT for a first car, but because the seller did this very thing, I walked away. He very poorly (circa 2005) edited the images to leave out all the rust on the edges of all body panels and the driver’s side dent that made the door not work correctly. He was asking a bit under a grand IIRC which, frankly, made it overpriced by about a grand.

I just did this over the weekend, drove 311 miles one way and turned around and drove home after the vehicle was way rustier than the pictures showed. The seller knew he was deceptive too.

I looked at a 1983 D150 Miser edition off marketplace. The guy was asking $2k for it and said the body was in good shape and it ran well, I could drive it home (not fast but it would make it). It was a 2wd slant six with the 4 speed with overdrive. I had an 81 just like it in 2004. So I looked over the pictures, someone did a poor patch job on the floor, but I can get floor pans. So I asked for pictures of any other rust on it. He sent me the usual wheel well rot pictures (seriously, must be a mopar factory option). I deemed it ok to make the trip and sent him a small deposit.

I drove 311 miles with my dad and an empty U haul carrier. Got to the truck and the bed floor had holes in it, the tailgate wouldn’t open, bottoms of the doors were rusty, and the roof skin was so rusted it had detached from the windshield frame and flapped. I took it for a test drive and the clutch released at the highest point of travel (manual adjustment could be alright?) and the shift linkages were so shot that you couldn’t really shift it without fiddling a lot. The final nail in the coffin was the no emergency brake and the brake light came on when I drove it around the block.

I tried to bargain with the guy for what the vehicle was worth in that condition. He said it wasn’t that bad and I was already there so he would take $100 off the price but that was it. So I walked away. He refused to give me back my deposit too, so I was a bit mad about that too.

I was not too pleased. If he had been willing to budge a little more on the price, to match the condition I’d have still bought it. But as it sat I was not buying it. Oh and the driver’s door wouldn’t open from the inside.

What was his asking price? From your description, sounds like he should have paid you to take the truck from him. Good times with Dad though?

He was originally asking $2k. I talked with him a little bit, but didn’t jump on it. Later in the week he dropped it to $1800 so I was willing to pay that if it was in the shape he described. I even sent him a $200 deposit to hold it.

After I pointed out all of the rust he didn’t mention (oh and the bench seat wasn’t bolted down and neither were the floor anchors for the seatbelts. The mounting spots were cut out ) He said he could do $1700 but no lower. The “come on, you’re already here” part bugged me. I was still willing to buy it until I test drove it and found the linkages were so worn for the shifter that you really couldn’t reliably find a gear outside of reverse.
